Change is necessary

School project – 2024

Brief: Conceive and produce an animation to accompany the audio file that will clarify, energise, and illuminate the words of Sarah Ichioka.

This is my submission for a competition run by The RSA that I took part in through Ravensbourne simultaneously with other projects.

I was given an audio file of a speech by urbanist and systems thinker Sarah Ichioka. She describes the changes in mindset and practice that can help us shift from sustainable design to a truly radical regenerative approach.

I started off by analysing the transcript and listening to the audio clip again and again. Finding key concepts and developing visual metaphors was my focus for this part of the process. From this, I could start to make choices for the visual- and storytelling side of the piece.

I saw the audio clip as something hopeful. The colours and mood of the piece reflect this through soft, soothing, bright gradients. I chose to compose a soundtrack for the animation. The music enhances the viewing experience with the added pace and rhythm it gives, while also elevating the visual mood

Sarah Ichioka talks about change that everyone needs to take part in to achieve optimal results. Therefore, illustrating the concepts in a way that can resonate with anyone was important.

Because of this, the main character of my piece is abstract and therefore inclusive and without bias. The main character is a circle with no predetermined defining characteristics that can represent and inspire anyone watching.

The main character is moving through a world that seems abstract, but the concepts explored by Ichioka are illustrated clearly while distilled into its most rudimentary form.
